Annie Bell
Carlis
February 28, 1933 – April 27, 2014
On February 28 th , 1933 the Lord blessed Robert Toney and Mattie Hankins with their perfect angel, Annie Bell Toney. As she matured, she became affectionately known as "Chief". Some say it was because of her Choctaw heritage. Her siblings would say it was because she ruled as second mom to them all. From her days of attending New Hope Elementary, Annie Bell would prove herself to be studious. She made time to pick cotton and beans in the fields of Oktaha, Oklahoma, excel in her studies and tend to the needs of her brothers and sisters.
Upon graduating from high school, she set out to Dodge City Community College to become a nurse. Again, school was not an issue as her heart was to tend to the sick and needy this was a lifelong passion to be fulfilled. Her skills and passion lead her to St. Johns Hospital, Tulsa, OK; McDonnell Douglas, Tulsa, OK; and the Veterans Administration in Kansas City, MO.
While performing her duties of taking care of others, she soon took on another role, that of a wife and mother. While married to Nathaniel Carlis Sr., they brought into this world Nathaniel Carlis III, Kim Carlis Dupriest, and Anthony Carlis. The same manner in which she took care of complete strangers, with such compassion, she did more than enough for her children. She worked to make sure her children received every advantage that she could give them. It was said that she hired a maid to help with the cooking and cleaning for the children and they never had to iron or complete any chores. She wanted her children to feel loved and deserving of everything she had to give. She had a great sense of humor and was the best friend to her children. Her openness with them on any subject was never off limits. She also served as doctor and nurse to the family. She handled whatever was needed. Her children say that she was THE BEST MOTHER.
All her years caring for others earned her a reward greater than life could ever present, on April 27, 2014, the Lord called her home to rest. Finally receiving back the love she deserved for taking care of His children.
She is preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Eddie Oakley.
Those who will miss the "Chief", her children, Nathaniel Carlis III, Kim Carlis Dupriest, and Anthony Carlis, her original kids: Carl Oakley, Muskogee, OK; LeeAnna Holt, Wichita, KS; Mel Oakley, and Ray Oakley, both of Tulsa, OK; and Pearl Oakley, San Antonio, TX.
Annie Bell will be more than missed. Her legacy of love and care will forever be remembered and passed on to a host of grandchildren, Daniel Carlis, Noelle Carlis, Nathaniel Carlis IV, Bobby Dupriest, Thomas Dupriest, Daisy Dupriest and Anthony Jerome Carlis, along with a host of great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
