Arthur Lee Cato, Sr., 73, laborer, transitioned, Thursday, March 19, 2015, in St. Francis Hospital, Tulsa, OK.
Arthur Lee Cato was born to Ethel and Theodore Cato on July 20th , 1941 in Vernon, Oklahoma. He passed on march 19, 2015 at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, OK. Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Ralph, and three sisters, Rosie Lee, Cynthia, and Nadine. He was a baptized member of Collins Community AME Church in garden Days, OKC.
Arthur resided for a time in Tulsa where he worked at Big Four Foundry Corporation. thereafter, he relocated to Oklahoma City where he was employed with the City of Oklahoma City Sanitation Department. Arthur was active in the Oklahoma City Sanitation Worker's Strike being led by civil rights leader, Clara Luper. It was during this period in 1969, when Arthur participated in a "sit-in" protest which led to him being jailed along with his co-workers. he also held positions at Caddo Chemical Can Company and BFI.
In 1989, Arthur retired and moved back to Vernon, Oklahoma. there, he enjoyed working outdoors at farming and ranching. He was a good mechanic. He was also active in the community, serving on the VFC Board of Directors for 18 years and as a caretaker for the local cemetery.
Arthur truly loved his family and enjoyed the association of many lifelong friends, including Mary Ann, Gwendolyn Kay, Francis and Tammie, the mothers of his beautiful children.
Arthur is survived by his eleven children; Ginger, Curtis, Arthur (Rebecca), Melvin (Tanzania), Byron (Denise) Rozelyn, Shawna, Vincent (Melissa), Brian (Daysheon), Cody and Allen(Larissa). He leaves to cherish his memory, 21 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, four brothers, Clifford (Sonny), Robert, Bennie Earl, and Verdis, six sisters, Fay, Beatrice, Anice, Wyona, Effie and Shirley, along with a host of other relatives and friends.
A Home going service will be conducted, Saturday, March 28, 2015, 1:00 p.m. Vernon School, Vernon, OK. Interment will follow in Vernon Cemetery, Vernon, OK.
Visitation will be Friday, 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
The family has been cared for by House of Winn Funeral Home.
