Mrs. Bennie Ruth Delonia, age 78, long time retired educator in the city, passed away in her home, Thursday, October 2, 2014.
Mrs. Bennie Ruth Douglas Delonia was born May 3, 1936 in Caldwell, TX; to M.B. Doulgas and Annie Mae Scott Douglas. Bennie was one of twelve children born to this union.
Bennie started her education in Caldwell, TX; graduating from Freeman High School. Then she went onto Northeastern State University graduating with a Master's Degree in Education with a Minor in Music. She went on to teach at Morris Publics and Westside Elementary. She was the first African American Educator in Morris Public Schools.
Bennie professed her love for Christ at an early age uniting with Greater Jones Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church under the direction of Rev. Lyons Manuel. She worked in many auxiliaries in the church, Superintendent of Sunday School, District Director of Buds of Promise, and Vice President of the Missionary Society.
Mrs. Bennie Delonia was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
Bennie met and married Harold Delonia Sr. She had eight children who she loved dearly.
Bennie Ruth was a natural homemaker, taking a great deal of care of everyone she came in contact with, whether it was through her teaching, at home raising her children, siblings and grandchildren.
Bennie Ruth Delonia went home to be with the Lord, October 2, 2014.
Preceding her in passing are her husband, Harold D. Delonia Sr., parents, sisters, Billie Adams, Dorothy Emery, Annie Fae, Joyce Brown, Willie Jewel Douglas, and Leon Canady, children, James McDowell and Harold D. Delonia Jr., grandchildren, Jackie McDowell, Harold D. Delonia III, Jacqueline Franks, Joselyn Franks, and Jasmine Franks, and two infants.
Bennie's survivors include her children, Donnie Ray Delonia (Anita), George L. Delonia Sr., Barbara J. Ransom (Haldane), Angelia D. Franks (Terry), Ruthie L. Simms, Christina D. Delonia, brothers and sisters, Josephine Miller, Earnestine Roseborough, Opal Donahue (Hershell), Sallie "Spoonie" Bell, Shirley Warren, Melvin Douglas (Pat), Verne Walker, 34 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, along with a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that will miss her dearly.
A Home Going Celebration will be conducted, Saturday, October 11,2014
at 2:00 p.m. in St Matthew Baptist Church, 1001 E. Chicago St.
