On December 29, 1932 in Idabel, OK; (McCurtain County) Lee George Buford and Annie Mae Hailey were blessed with a beautiful baby girl and they named her, Betty Jewell. Betty was the second of three children born to this union.
Betty began her primary education in the Idabel School System. In the early 1940's the family relocated to Okmulgee, OK; and Betty continued her education in the Uganda Martyrs School and Okmulgee Public School system. She attended Connors State College and continued her education graduating from Northeastern State University where she obtained her degree in Education. She was a former employee of Okmulgee Laundry and retired from the Okmulgee Public School system where she taught for over 14 years.
Betty until her death, was a faithful member of The Church of the Living God Temple #94, Okmulgee, OK. She served as church secretary/clerk for a number of years, and a member of the Women's Work Auxiliary and worked with the Youth Department.
In 1969 Betty and James Grant Sr. were united in marriage until 2015 when the Master called him home. Betty and James lovingly combined their families and together raised a total of nine children.
Betty loved crocheting, family gatherings and working with young people. She always had a smile and a kind word.
Preceding her in death are her parents, her husband, one brother Lawrence Crawford, two daughters, Nellie Jean Cullom and Joan Marie Hudson and a step-daughter, Janice Grant Webb.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her sons, Warren G. Hurd Jr., Beaumont, CA; Edward Grant, James Grant Jr., and Steven Grant, all of Okmulgee, OK; her daughters, June Marie Powell, Tulsa, OK; and Angela (James) Davis, Oklahoma City, OK; one brother, Larry (Barbara) Massey and a host of grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
A Home Going Service is scheduled Saturday, June 2, 2018, 1:00 p.m., The Church of the Living God Temple #94, 1100 Osage Ave., Okmulgee, OK, Elder Wilmer Cummings eulogizing; interment will follow in Okmulgee Cemetery, Okmulgee, OK.
Visitation will be Friday, 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
The family has been cared for by House of Winn Funeral Homes.
