THE RIGHT REVEREND LEE VICKER BROOM

Born March 26, 1937 in Phoenix, Arizona, Bishop Lee Vicker Broom was the third of thirteen children born to the late Elder Ike and Mother Aneva Broom. At the age of five, he met Bishop Charles Harrison Mason when his father took him to a tent revival. He moved to Oklahoma with his family when he was nine years old.

Lee Vicker Broom graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Sapulpa, Oklahoma in 1956. After high school, he joined the US Marine Corps, serving his country faithfully for two years. While in the Marine Corps, he served as a stock clerk. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Sharpshooter and All Marine Football awards. In 1964, he was the first black to work with the Sapulpa Jaycees. That same year, he carried the torch from Sapulpa to Bristow for the Olympics which were held in Germany. He played semi-pro football in Tulsa the following year.

In 1965 Bishop Broom was saved and filled with the Holy Ghost at Paige Memorial under the ministry of the late Rev. J.L. Alaman. In 1967, he was installed as pastor of First Church Of God In Christ, Sapulpa, Oklahoma. He later became pastor of both the Pawnee and Mt. Zion No. 2 Church Of God In Christ in Okmulgee. He held the following positions of leadership as he served in the Oklahoma Northwest Jurisdiction: Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, Assistant Jurisdictional Secretary, Episcopal Adjutant (serving two Prelates). In the National Church, he served as the Deputy Registrar, Chairman of the Benevolent and Disaster Fund within the College of Bishops, Assistant Chairman of the Screening Committee led by Bishop Roger L. Jones, Sr., Chairman of the National Board of Trustees. In 1975, he was featured in the "Who's Who" in the Church Of God In Christ.

In February of 1972, he was introduced to Martha Pogue of Ada, Oklahoma. On October 7th of that same year they were married. They celebrated 50 years of marriage in October 2022. Bishop Broom was employed as a dry cleaner. He worked for two other cleaners before working with Grindstaff Cleaner as a spotter and manager. While at Grindstaff, he received the National Spotters Award. He retired from dry cleaning after thirty-five years.

In 1995, after years of dedication and hard work in the local, jurisdictional and national work of the Church Of God In Christ, Elder Lee Vicker Broom was installed and consecrated as Prelate of the Oklahoma Northwest Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction. Bishop Broom enjoyed many accomplishment during his tenure as Prelate. In the Tulsa community, he worked with Superintendent B.F. Boren, Sr. and Lt. Busby on the Gangs and Police Force. Additionally, he was First Vice President of the Ministerial Alliance. Bishop Broom was the founding President and CEO of Bishop's Northside Chapel Funeral Home, the only non-profit funeral home in the United States and was able to assist many families with their burial needs.

On Friday, April 14, 2023, surrounded by his darling wife, who lovingly labored by his side, along with his loved ones, Bishop Lee Vicker Broom answered the Father's call to come home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elder Ike Broom, Mother Aneva Broom, siblings: Ike Broom, James Earl Broom, Eva Mae Broom-Kindred, Martha Broom-Leshore, and Ernestine Broom-Henry. Bishop Broom leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of fifty years, Martha Pogue Broom, his children: Lee Vernon Dale (Grace), Lee Broom, Jr., Cassandra Broom-Henderson, Tamisha Broom-Weatherd (Herman), brothers, Lester Broom (Peggy), Ishmael Broom (Willie), Calvin Broom (Cora), John Michael Broom (Lois), Ray (Eldrina), sisters, Connie Broom-Ellis, Marjorie Broom-Jones, Bobby Steward, a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, God Daughters: Teresa Releford-Hall, Amey Joy Tillman, Anita Huffman-Robinson, Vodra E. Smith, nieces, nephews, dear family members along with the Oklahoma Northwest Jurisdiction.

Jurisdictional Homegoing Service will be held on Wednesday, April, 26, 2023 at 11:00 a.m.,  in the Calvary Baptist Church, 412 N. 7 th St., Sapulpa, OK with public viewing beginning at 9:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m.

Bishop L.V. Broom will lie in state on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at Hearne Temple C.O.G.I.C., 1541 N. Madison Ave, Tulsa, OK 74106 during the hours of 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

National Home Going Service will be held on Thursday, April 27, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. in the Garnett Road Baptist Church, 620 S. Garnett Road, Tulsa, OK 74128. Public viewing will be from 8:00 a.m. -10:00 a.m. Interment will follow the service in the Fort Gibson National Cemetery, Fort Gibson, OK.
