Charles
Talton
January 27, 1937 – March 27, 2022
On Wednesday January 27 th , 1937 our Heavenly Father placed the breath of life into the lungs of a baby boy named Charles Talton. Charles was the third son born to Emegine and Chris Talton, Sr. Charles grew up and lived his life in Okmulgee, attending Attucks, Banneker and Dunbar schools. He was raised in the church and remained committed to the Lord throughout his life. From an early age, Charles made a name for himself as a working man and a provider for his family. Charles was always known to be available to assist others when there was work to be done. He was blessed with a beautiful singing voice, and some may recall hearing him sing with a men's quartet on the local radio station on Sunday mornings. Charles filled his days with the things he enjoyed such as raising chickens and hogs, gardening, fishing, entertaining people and cooking delicious briskets, ribs and cheesecakes for his neighbors and friends. Charles was the first person ever known to fry a turkey way back in the day!
Charles worked in Okmulgee, Tulsa and the surrounding area. In his early days, Charles was employed at the local peanut factory and later as a ranking Lieutenant Officer with the Okmulgee Police Department, where he worked alongside two of his brothers. Charles served as Lieutenant Police Officer for the Okmulgee Police Department for 27 years. Throughout this time, Charles also owned and operated his own barbershop on the corner of Fifth & Muskogee St in downtown Okmulgee. It was here that you could often find genuine men's fellowship taking place while waiting in line for a shave and a haircut. Charles receives credit for giving many young men their first haircut, and most clients remained with him until he hung up his clippers once and for all in 2012.
Bro. Talton demonstrated servant leadership at Mt. Zion Baptist Church through roles as Deacon, Trustee, Brotherhood President and member of the Senior Choir for more than twenty-five years. It was not unusual to hear Charles' beautiful singing voice, ranging from baritone to tenor, being requested around town at various worship experiences.
Charles obtained his earthly reward on March 19 th , 1971 when he married an angel named Nannye B. Griffin. Charles and his wife were blessed to love seven children and raise 5, as his infant twin sons proceeded him in death. Charles fiercely loved his 6 grandchildren and 1 grandchild who proceeded him in death, 14 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
Charles had many names or titles over the course of his life; whether being called "Mr. Talton", "Officer Talton", "CT", "Shine" or most lovingly "Poppy".
On Sunday, March 27 th , 2022 exactly two months after his 85th birthday, Charles received his invitation for Heavenly rest and was once again in the arms of his wife Nan with a host of dearly departed family members also there to welcome him home: his mother and father, Emegine and Chris, Sr; brothers Jr Chris, Tommy and Herbert (Locke); twin sons Ronald and Randall; daughter Janice Holloway and granddaughter Kimberly Lyons Anderson.
Those left behind to continue his legacy include: four children, Deborah O'Guin; Nathan Griffin; Charles D. Talton, and Collette Talton. Siblings include: Verna (Chester) Cole; Fred (Linda) Williams; Pattsy Parker; Gaye (Leatrice) Talton; Deborah (Michael) Ibe and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
