Floyd Johnson departed this life on May 3, 2016. He was 92 years old. Floyd was born in Waldo, Arkansas on December 11, 1923 to the union of Dock and Dester Johnson.
Floyd moved to Haskell, Oklahoma in 1937 at the age of 14 where he attended Booker T. Washington High School.
His parents, Dock and Dester Johnson, raised him in a loving Christian home. He was baptized at an early age and became a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. He followed his father's foot steps and became a Senior Deacon. He remained a faithful member until his death.
Floyd entered the United States Army on March 1, 1943 and was honorably discharged on January 16, 1946. He was assigned to the Pacific Islands where he served as a Light Machine Gunner. He saw live combat and was stationed in the Southern Philippines, the Northern Solomon Islands and New Guinea. He was a member of the all black 369th Infantry known as the "Harlem Hell fighters". He received the "Philippine Liberation" award, the Good Conduct Medal and for live combat, the Combat Infantry Award.
Upon being discharged from the U.S. Army in 1946, he returned to Haskell and married the love of his life, Anna White. He was a devoted husband and father, faithful and diligent in caring for his family. He was employed with Brazeal Masonry for many years and retired in 1985.
Preceding him in death are his parents Dock and Dester Johnson and younger brother, Claude Johnson.
He leaves to cherish his precious memory, his wife, Anna, of 69 ½ wonderful years, son, Luther Johnson, Tulsa, OK; daughters, Gloria Johnson (Eddie) McDonald, Canton, MI; Franceil Johnson and Pamela Johnson Derrick, both of Tulsa, OKand a sister, Christine Wiley, Muskogee, OK. He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren along with a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews
A Home Going Celebration is scheduled for Tuesday, May 10, 2016, 11:00 a.m., First Baptist Church Haskell, 1401 N. Haskell Blvd., Haskell, OK. Interment will follow in Haskell City Cemetery.
Visitation will be Monday, 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
