Obituary

Mrs. Helen Delores Harris departed her earthly life on Thursday, June 3, 2021 to be with her Lord and savior, Jesus Christ at the age of 85. She was born April 11, 1936 to the union of Charles Edward Johnson and Lillian Beatrice Johnson in Gallatin, Missouri. Helen was the third born of four children. She received her education in the Kansas City Public Schools, attending Garrison Elementary, R.T. Coles Jr. High, and Lincoln High School.

Helen's pride was her four daughters, Diane Payne Warfield, Rochelle Payne Tolbert, Rhonda Payne Harris, and Lynda Payne Swayne, and a special granddaughter, Rishonda Payne, who she raised.

In 1966 Helen moved her family from Kansas City, Missouri to Muskogee after uniting in marriage with the late Kenneth Leroy Harris.    They remained together until his passing in March 1987, sharing a successful business "Harris Auto Garage" on the corner of the old Fondulac St, where The Martin Luther King Community Center now stands. Helen had a longstanding career at the Muskogee Regional Medical Center as a Dietitian, retiring after 30 years.  Helen could not slow down. She took on a second career at Monarch Inc. serving as the Dietary Food Service Manager.  She loved working with the young women in treatment at the center, and they loved her, especially her cooking! Her peach cobbler, and chicken and dumplings were always a hit. After 15 years, she enjoyed another retirement, and received several awards for her contributions. She was a go getter and loved being around people, especially her spiritual church family at New Jerusalem Baptist Church.

Helen was preceded in death by her father, Charles Johnson, her mother, Lillian Johnson, late husband, Kenneth Harris, her brothers, Charles Edward Johnson II and Larry Johnson;  daughters, Diane Payne Warfield and Rochelle Payne Tolbert.
