Her Life's Story

Henrietta McGee Scroggins was born January 18, 1919 to Jim and Emily McGee in Sampson, Oklahoma. She gave her life to Christ at an early age and was baptized at Morning Star Baptist Church in Pierce, Oklahoma and later became a member of Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church until her death.

After eight years of attending Warrior School in Pierce, Henrietta finished her education at Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa and Connors State College.

On January 16, 1941, Henrietta was united in holy matrimony to Iverlee (Sonny) Scroggins. No children were born to this union. God blessed them to be parents to six beautiful flowers. She and Iverlee had their own business for several years. She later became site manager for the Senior Citizen Center in Checotah until her retirement.

Henrietta was very active in her community as Warrior Cemetery president, Salvation Army Volunteer, VFW Auxiliary, Eastern Star, Prince Hall Association, Member of the Federated Colored Women's Club/Gardenia Arts Club, Checotah Main St. Friends of Honey Springs Battlefield Park, Democrat Chairman of Ward II and she also served on the Checotah Council Board for eight years.

Henrietta was preceded in death by her parents, husband Iverlee, son Donald Love and grandson Jarrod Holloway. She was the last surviving child of Jim and Emily.

She leaves to cherish her loving memories to five children: Elaine "Jeri" Gaines (Sam), of Evanston, IL; Nora Jean Dan, Janice "Lean" Braxton (Thomas), Sarah "Holly" Holloway (Rev. B. J.), and Judy Scroggins all of Spencer, OK; 13 grandchildren: Angela Love Bradford, Donald Love II, Nicole Dan, Antoinette "Toni" Banks, James Dan Jr., Darryl Love, Chevis Holloway, Takiyah Cudjo, Fahad Abulijedayal, Krischev Holloway, Tanisha Braxton, Jajuan Braxton, Rebecca Shaun Love William; two sister-in-laws: Louise Woodfork McGee of Checotah, OK; Wanda "Dovie" Scroggins Reed (Joe) of Evanston, IL; extended family Etoyle Love, Nancy Lane and Sherria Lois Wedlow; devoted neighbor Darylnn Miller and a host of great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A Home Going Service is scheduled Saturday, January 20, 2018, 11:00 a.m. First Baptist Church, 210 SW 2nd Street, Checotah, OK; with Rev. George Johnson delivering the eulogy.  Interment will follow in Warrior Cemetery, Checotah, OK.

Visitation will be Friday, 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
