Janie Etta Harris, age, 63, a resident of Muskogee, transitioned to her heavenly home, Tuesday, April 21,2015.
On June 14, 1951, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, a baby girl was born to A.G. and Willia Mae Harris. She was named after two sisters of notable character, Jayne Douglas and Etta White-Jackson. Jayne ("God's Gracious Gift)/ Etta (Little One"); hence, Jayne Etta Harris. Errors in transposing information over public records during the subsequent years rendered Jayne to Janie. Hence, Janie Etta Harris.
Janie was educated in the Muskogee Public School system and graduated from Manual Training High School with the class of 1969. Though the school system was racially segregated at this time, in retrospect, the intrinsic value of this journey proved to be immeasurable. Young minds and wills were being molded by those who themselves were facing and overcoming the many obstacles presented by the current mindsets of the day.
Janie left the work environment after working a number of years for the U.S. Postal Service and resumed academic studies at Northeastern State University (NSU). Janie earned her Bachelor's Degree in 1983 in the field of Counseling Psychology. After one year of studies in the Master's program at NSU, Janie accepted a social worker position with the Department of human Services where she enjoyed a career of public service until her retirement in 2010.
Janie was originally baptized at the age of six where she became and remained a member of Metropolitan Baptist Church into adulthood. However, 1978, Janie made her own life changing profession of a hope in Christ and received Him as both Savior and Lord in her life. Janie enjoyed many years of working with youth groups, directing youth choirs, and singing gospel music in the local and surrounding areas with other choirs and as a solo artist.
Janie's earthly journey came to its end on April 21, 2015 as her eternal Father beckoned her home.
Family members who remain to cherish memories of Janie's journey include; a son, Michael, five grandchildren, Chrystal, Tameka, Chelci, Damon, Makala, three great-grandchildren, a brother, Jimmie (Janice), a god-sister, Toni, a #1 nephew, Anthony, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A Home Going Celebration will be conducted, Saturday, May 2, 2015, 11:00 a.m., Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 902 Rutherford, Muskogee, OK. Cremation to follow.
Visitation will be Friday, May 1, 2015 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
