Obituary

Joan Josephine Caldwell was born on July 25, 1944 in Boynton, Oklahoma in the awaiting arms of Florence M. Charles and Joe Caldwell.  SHe was the youngest of three daughters, Marguerite, Peggy and Joan.  Her parents and eldest sister, Marguerite preceded her in death.

Joan accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.  Although life later led her to a different city she never forgot her home church.  In 1985 she returned home to Boynton and reunited with Mt. Zion Baptist Church.  She served the church in many capacities, she was a devoted financial treasurer, pastor's aide chairperson, black history month chairperson and cook.  She loved the Lord, she exemplified His glory through repentance, her walk with Him, works, trials and testimony.  She adored her Mt. Zion Baptist Church family and friends until God called her home, Tuesday, January 3, 2017.

Joan was raised in Boynton, Oklahoma and received her formal education from Wheatley Public Schools.  She was a proud, "Boyntonite" and a devoted Boynton Alumni always making it her business to attend the alumni meetings, reunions and festivities.  Joan was a devoted wife and mother and attended Maricopa Junior College in Phoenix, Arizona and pursued a career as a professional LPN.  SHe was gainfully employed with various medical facilities in the Phoenix area.

In 1964, Joan was joined in holy matrimony to Floyd Mason and remained until his untimely death in 1977.  This union was blessed with three beautiful children, David, Bridgette, and James.  She was also blessed with another daughter, Loretta and son, Dale whom she received as her own.  She was preceded in death by her daughter Bridgette on July 6, 2014.  Joan devoted her life to caring for her sister, Peggy and grandchildren.  Joan was extremely loving mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend who gave unselfishly of herself.  She exemplified the Proverbs Woman "Virtuous Woman" her worth was far above rubies.

In her spare time she loved fishing, cooking, traveling and going to the casino.  But most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, husband, eldest sister, daughter, niece, Elizabeth Cherry and nephew, Albert Joe Cherry.

She leaves to celebrate her life and continue her legacy her sons, David (Shelly) Mason, Muskogee, OK; James (Nena) Mason, Phoenix, AZ; and Dale Amie, Kansas City, MO; daughter, Loretta (Dedric) McBride, Tulsa, OK; grandsons, Daquan Lang, Morris, OK; Trentez & Xavier Mason, Phoenix, AZ; granddaughters, DaMonay Mason, of the home, DeAndria Carter, Tiffany Pouncil, Tierra Mason and Isis Mason, all of Muskogee, OK; Marquandra Mason, Phoenix, AZ; Justice Mason, Shawnee, OK; 7 great grandchildren, including Akiya and Jaicyionn, her sisters, Peggy Miller, of the home, and Juanita Bell, Atlanta, GA; a special sister in law, Elnora Reed; a life long friend, Jessie Mae Williams and special niece, Linda Campbell and a host of nieces, nephews, including, Tasha Cherry, Danielle Bird, Chevon Jefferson, Larry Bird, Brad Campbell, Robert Fisher and Darius Winston and a host of cousins, other realtives and friends.


A Home Going Service is scheduled Saturday, January 7, 2017, 1:00 p.m., Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Boynton, OK.  Interment will follow in Cane Creek Cemetery, Boynton, OK.

Visitation will be Friday, 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
