Obituary

In Loving Memory of Louis Edward Chatman, Sr.

Louis Edward Chatman was born on September 7, 1947, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, to Levi and Odessa (DeGraftenreed) Chatman. He was called home to be with our Heavenly Father on Monday, March 31, 2025, at the Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center in Muskogee.

Louis accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and was baptized at Canaan Missionary Baptist Church. Throughout his life, his relationship with the Lord grew deeper, and he demonstrated unwavering faith until the very end. He diligently studied the Word of God and shared its wisdom with anyone willing to listen, a testament to his devotion and love for the Lord.

After graduating from Manual Training High School in Muskogee, Louis enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1967, serving honorably during the Vietnam War. He later worked for over 20 years at Griffin's Fine Foods in Muskogee, where he was known for his dedication and strong work ethic.

Louis met Cheryl L. Jones in high school, and they later married. To this union were born four children: Louis Edward Chatman Jr. of Plano, TX; Sherilyn L. Tillman (Joe) of Muskogee, OK; Larry E. Chatman (Tracey) of Mansfield, TX; and Shalonda Chatman Brown of Plano, TX.

Louis led a private life and found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He cherished peace and tranquility and found fulfillment in his many talents, including carpentry, mechanics, and building. He loved spending time outdoors, traveling the open road, and had a profound passion for music, which brought him comfort and joy.

Louis was preceded in death by his parents, Levi and Odessa Chatman, as well as his siblings: Patricia Chatman, Regina Faye Johnson, Emma Faye Antoine, Ronald Chatman, William Lee Chatman, and John Terry Chatman.

He leaves to cherish his memories with his children: Louis Edward Chatman, Jr. (Plano, TX), Sherilyn L. Tillman (Joe) (Muskogee, OK), Larry E. Chatman (Tracey) (Mansfield, TX), and Shalonda L. Chatman Brown (Plano, TX); three siblings: Teresa White (John) (Muskogee, OK), Rosemary Williams (James) (Tulsa, OK), and Terrell Chatman (Muskogee, OK); 14 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends who loved him dearly.

Louis's life was a testimony of faith, love, and dedication. As we grieve his passing, we also celebrate his legacy, knowing he is now at peace in the presence of the Lord he loved so deeply.
