Lovie Morris
The Life of Lovie L. Morris began when Della Palmer and Jasper W. Thompson were blessed with one of seventeen (17) children. Lovie grew up in Oklahoma, but spent most of her life in the city of Muskogee. She married William Bates and to this union, five children were born. This relationship resolved, but they remained the best of friends. Later, Lovie met and married Charles Morris and to this union, one child was born. She was preceded in her journey on earth by both her spouses, a daughter, fifteen (15) of her siblings and two grandsons.
Lovie joined and attended the Church of Christ for more than fifty (50) years and served as the Culinary Director for many of those years; a position she truly enjoyed. Serving others was very high on her list of priorities.
Lovie was a loving Mother and great chef. If you ever came to her house, there was always some good home cooking and she would encourage you to eat. In fact, she would make you eat something. Cooking, planting gardens and canning were among her favorite things to do. Her recipes were not written down on paper but children could definitely tell that they were filled with one special and important ingredient-love. We will surely miss her, her straight forwardness, our holiday meals, but most of all, her love and compassion for all-a legacy that we must keep alive.
Lovie's life journey on this earth was completed on Monday, April 28, 2014. She bore her illness patiently for over three years, surrounded and supported by devoted family members who willingly cared for her from the beginning to the end. Cherished memories will always be in the hearts of her children: Naomi Oakley, Muskogee, OK; Maggie (Willie) Watts, John (Brenda) Morris, Kansas City, MO; Robert Bates, Tullahassee, OK; and Lovie McGee, Albuquerque, NM; a step-son, George (Marie) Morris, Kansas City, KS; a sister, Clotel Wesley, Oklahoma City, OK; 17 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, 30 great-great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and her beloved, adopted family Art and Sylvia Ortiz.
A Home Going Celebration will be conducted Saturday, May 3, 2014, 3:00 p.m., 18th & Denison Church of Christ, with Bro. Eric Rodgers, eulogizing. Interment will follow in Booker T. Washington Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday, 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
The family has been cared for by the Winn family at Granger-House of Winn Funeral Home.
