Obituary

On April 15, 1969 Billy and Joan Pouncil welcomed a baby boy, Melvin Wayne, to complete their family. He was preceded in death by both parents and his beloved sister Evangelyn "Ann" Pouncil and his brother Billy Pouncil Jr.

Melvin was an outstanding basketball player. When around other teammates and family members, he proclaimed himself as "The Champ" and it was agreed on by all that he have that title. He was one of the most effective players to ever grace Class B State Tournament. Excellent close to the basket, he also possessed a feathery turnaround jumpshot from the 18-ft range. He averaged 26.8 points, 14 rebounds, and 2.3 assists his Senior year. Melvin was a member of the 1988 All-State Basketball Team, and was named one of the "Super 5" in Oklahoma Basketball. He was also a member of two Boynton Class B State Championships, and the "1980's Team of the Decade". He was a true "Master of the Court".

Melvin graduated from Boynton High School in 1988.

Melvin had a heart for laying brick and pouring concrete.

In February 2024 he gave his life back to Christ at the church he grew up in Mt. Zion Baptist Church and he enjoyed fellowshipping on Sundays.

He peacefully departed from this world on July 19, 2024 at St Francis Hospital surrounded by family.

A very special thanks go to Tierra Mason and Angela Jackson, for the patience, nurturing and care given throughout his sickness. To "HIS MOM" Gloria Jean Folks for accepting him to be your son, but most of all for standing by him through his sickness when he felt like giving up and throwing in the towel, your kind heart doesn't go unnoticed.

He leaves to mourn his passing: a son Jermaine Wordlow, a daughter Jasmine (Joshua) Owens; his grandchildren Jayda Wordlow, Jamaria "Daisy" Wordlow, Joshua Jr., Jeremiah, Janae, Jayden, Jordan, and Journee Owens: 2 special nieces Tiffany Pouncil and Tierra Mason; 7 great nieces and nephews, including "His Pretty" Zi'Yionn Broadway; his Special Aunts Georgiann Belton, Debra K. Belton, Carolyn Lee, Janice Pouncil, whom every Mother's Day received a special flower from Melvin. He also leaves behind numerous uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.

Melvin Wayne Pouncil will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His warm heart and infectious laughter will remain forever etched in the memories of those lives he touched.

A Home Going service is scheduled Saturday, July 27th, 2024, 1:00 p.m., Boynton Wheatley Community Center, Boynton, OK; with Pastor Jerry Moore, eulogizing.   Interment will follow in Lee Cemetery, Boynton, OK.
