Obituary

A precious baby girl, the first of eight children, was born on April 3, 1938, in Taft, Oklahoma, to Ora (Jacques) and Porter Foster. They named her Pauline. The family moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma, where Pauline attended Douglas Elementary School, Sadler Junior High School, and the historic Manual Training High School. She graduated in 1957. Pauline was a proud Manualite and served as the secretary on the Manual Training High School Reunion Committee.

After graduation, she was employed by Grant Smith Furniture, a black-owned business. Later, Pauline worked as a maid and nurse aide until taking a sabbatical following the death of her sister, Jacqueline Foster Gaston, to raise and nurture Jacqueline's five children, Nina, Rodney, Natalie, NeShara, and Ryan Gaston. She subsequently became their legal guardian. In addition, Pauline was the beloved and respected matriarch of the Foster family who selflessly guided her family with advice, stability, encouragement, and Christian values.

In 1979, she enrolled in the Comprehensive Employment & Training Program and began employment with the Muskogee Public Library. In 1980, Pauline received a promotion and became the newspaper indexer. She was also employed with the Muskogee Daily Phoenix as a newspaper librarian. Pauline received certification from the state of Oklahoma as a public librarian in the Eastern Oklahoma District Library System. She had a strong work ethic and retired from the workforce in 2006.

Pauline confessed a hope in Christ at an early age, joining Rayfield Baptist Church under the pastorage of Reverend E.G. Dyer. She rededicated her walk with Christ in 1989 under the leadership of Reverend Leroy Walker, Sr. Pauline loved the Rayfield Baptist Church family and adored her pastor and first lady. She was a faithful member who worked in multiple capacities. Pauline served as a church clerk, Sunday school teacher, usher, and was active in the Missionary Society. Pauline was passionate about reading her Bible and was diligent about her Sunday school lessons. She led a modest life with a caring and loving devotion to her family and church.

Pauline was humble and displayed a quiet mannerism which exemplified Christian love and the strength of Christ. She looked forward to the Foster family reunions and was always the first to contribute funding for other family members. Pauline loved a good laugh and enjoyed relaxing at home watching her favorite television shows. The family knew the times to avoid calling and visiting to prevent interference with her daily television show schedule.

Pauline kept a positive spirit and consistently expressed gratitude for the smallest gestures as her health declined. She will be truly missed, and we are grateful for the precious memories that will live in our hearts forever. We celebrate her homegoing and look forward to that great reunion.

Pauline was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, and son. Celebrating her life and legacy are two sons, James (Sandra) of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Roland (Regina) of Wichita, KS; daughter, Terri L. Thomas of Oklahoma City, OK; nieces and nephews, Nina Gaston of Wylie, TX, Rodney Gaston (Stephanie) of Arlington, TX, NeShara Gaston of Richmond, VA, Natalie Gaston of Oklahoma City, OK, and Ryan Gaston (Sonya) of Mesquite, TX; three brothers, William of Muskogee, OK, Ronnie (Parthenia) of Goochland, VA, and Darrell (Ivy) of Tulsa, OK; two sisters, Joyce Welch and Patricia Biglow (Kenneth), both of Wichita, KS; ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a host of other nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

A Home Going Celebration will be held on Saturday, May 27, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. in the Rayfield Baptist Church, 601 Indianapolis St, Muskogee, OK, with her pastor Rev. Leroy Walker, Sr. delivering the eulogy. Interment will follow in the Booker T. Washington Cemetery, Muskogee, OK.
