Obituary

Rhoda Johnson Spigner was born June 4, 1914 in the New Hope Community in Oktaha, Oklahoma to the union of James and Gracie (Thomas) Johnson. Rhoda was the second child of ten children.

Rhoda accepted Christ at a young age at New Hope Baptist Church. She also attended school at New Hope School.

After school, Rhoda married L. K. Spigner and to this union one child was born, Mildred Spigner (Sealy). The family moved to Chicago where Rhoda worked as a seamstress for more than forty years.

When her mother, Gracie, became ill, Rhoda returned to Oklahoma to become her primary caregiver. At this time, her mother was raising three of her granddaughters, Queen, Jeanie and Gloria, so Rhoda took on this responsibility of helping to rear them.  Rhoda nursed her mother back to good health, then she returned to work.  She was employed by Allied Moving Company and later by Advance Linen in Muskogee, OK.  She later retired.

After retiring, she became a full time baby sitter for two of her nephews, Mike and Steve Logan. These two boys kept her on her toes.  Later, she got a run for her money with helping to rear a great nephew, Kevin Colbert.

Throughout her years, she would also go to Ohio to visit and help her daughter Mildred with her six children.

Rhoda just had a knack for caregiving. When her mother took sick again, Rhoda cared for her until her death.  She was also the primary caregiver for three of her brothers doing their time of illness, caring for them until their death.  She cared for her precious grandson, Larry Sealy Jr. doing his time of illness while living with her.

In 2009, at age 95, Rhoda's own health began to fail. She was placed in Broadway Manor where she was treated with love, honor and respect.  She was referred to many of the staff as Aunt Rhoda.  Her loving niece, Gloria would visit her daily to keep her company and keep her up to date on all the family.  She remained there until her death on March 17, 2019, at age 104.

Rhoda was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter, two grandchildren, one great-grandchild, six brothers and three sisters.

She leaves to cherish her memory, five grandchildren, Glenda (Jimmie) Hill, Linda (Michael) Winston, Sharon Hawkins, Ronnie Sealy and Darrell (Wanda) Sealy, fifteen great-grandchildren, eight great-great grandchildren and a host of special nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.

A Home Going service is scheduled, Saturday, March 30, 2019, 11:00 a.m., New Hope Baptist Church, 12358 South 40th West, Oktaha, OK; with interment to follow in New Hope Cemetery, Oktaha, OK.

Visitation will be Friday, 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

The family has been cared for by House of Winn Funeral Homes
