Obituary

On April 23, 1953, a baby boy was born to Darthula (Gaines) Carter and O Z Carter, in Porter, Oklahoma. They named him Samuel and he was often referred to as Sam. He was a "momma's baby" and remained very, very close to his momma for the remainder of his life. At an early age, he professed his faith in Jesus Christ and joined Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Porter, Oklahoma.

Samuel attended Tullahassee Public Schools. He enjoyed school. His best friends were Glynn Hitchye and his brother Joe H. Carter. He was a good student, and a great basketball player. He helped lead his team to many victories. Samuel graduated from Carter G. Woodson High School in May 1971. He entered the work force immediately after graduation from high school.

A few years after graduation from high school Samuel was united in holy matrimony to Sharon Reynolds. This union was blessed with two children, Metra Carter, and Derrick Carter. Samuel was a great Dad and he remained close to Metra and Derrick for his entire life.

Samuel worked very hard.  He landed a good job with Dowell Incorporation. As a result of his generous spirit, his hard work, and a pleasant personality he was promoted to Chemical Engineer quickly. He was truly loved by many of his employees. Samuel retired from Dowell Incorporation as one of the top engineers in the company. He loved that job.

Samuel had a close relationship with his family. He loved his mother, even after he became ill and was not able to get out, he called his mother several times per day asking "Momma, how are you feeling Momma? He was always willing to help his family. He always offered to help his family regardless of the situation. He remained loving, protecting and caring for his family throughout his illness. He was always glad to get visitors.

During Samuel's illness, he never complained about being sick and how it affected him. Samuel quietly departed this life Thursday, September 14, 2023, in Saint Francis Hospital in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Samuel was preceded in death by his father – O Z Carter, two brothers – Steven L. Carter and Danny Carter, and his aunt – Reather Singleton.

His life will forever be cherished in the lives of his children Metra R. Carter, Derrick Carter, Robert Smith, and Dwan Borens (Merci); his mother – Darthula Carter, his brother – Joe Henry Carter, three sisters – Minnie L. Davis (Otis), Ozye M. Hill, and Martha L. Hitchye (Glynn) and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives , and friends.
