Verdis Theopolis Cato, Sr., 66, laborer, a resident of Edmond, OK; formerly of Vernon, OK; transitioned, Tuesday, May, 26, 2015 in OU Medical Center, Edmond, OK.
Verdis Theopolis Cato, was born March 15, 1949 two miles Northwest of Vernon, OK. He was number fourteen of fifteen children born to Theodore R. and Ethel Lee (Jones) Cato.
He attended Vernon and Dustin Public Schools, later joining the Job Corps where he graduated. Verdis worked for BFI in Oklahoma City, OK. He later worked for Tyson Landscaping.
Verdis was united in marriage to Joann Wiley in 1972 in Guthrie, OK. To this union, three children were born, Vickie, Verdis Jr. and Yolanda. This marriage later dissolved.
After Verdis health began to fail and he went to live with his sister, Nadine Tyson in Tulsa, OK. He became a member of her church, The Community Mission of the Lord Jesus Christ. He later moved to Oklahoma City, OK; and lived with his sisters, Wyona Bowie and Shirley Rhodes and other family members. He was a member of Abyssinia Missionary Baptist Church, Oklahoma City, OK. He resided in Edmond Health Center until his passing.
Verdis went home to be with the Lord, May 26, 2015.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Rosie Lee, Cynthia Yvonne Mitchell and Nadine Tyson, brothers, Ralph C. and Arthur Lee Cato, Sr.
Verdis leaves to cherish his memory, his children, Vickie, Verdis T. (Sharita) Cato, Jr. and Yolanda, step-children, Prentice, Shiryl, Terry and Cynthia, 27 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, sisters, Altha Fay Fields, Beatrice Grant, Anice Alexander, Wyona Bowie, Effie Guyton and Shirley (Peter) Rhodes, brothers, Theodore (Barbara) Cato, Robert (Liza) Cato and Bennie (Angela) Cato, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A Home Going Service will be conducted, Saturday, June 6, 2015, 1:00 p.m., Vernon School, Vernon, OK; with Rev. Jerry Lewis, eulogizing. Interment will follow in Vernon Cemetery, Vernon, OK.
Visitation will be Friday, 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
The family has been cared for by House of Winn Funeral Home.
