William Howard
Abernathy Jr.
July 20, 1949 – October 1, 2023
First Quarter
On July 20, 1949, the game of life tipped off for William H. Abernathy Jr., the third player on the team of William H. and Bertha (Davis) Abernathy in the small town of Okay, Oklahoma. Affectionately known as Howard by his family, he was a beloved team member to his sisters who fondly called him Brother. From an early age, he formed a dynamic duo with his best friend James Newton, both growing up playing in the community, attending Phyllis Wheatley School and St. John's Baptist Church in Gibson Station where he joined the team of faith through baptism.
Second Quarter
Howard was an all-star player from an early age, particularly shining on the basketball court. His talent led him to become an all-stater at Okay High School, graduating with the class of 1967. He then dribbled his way to Connors State College, continuing his passion for basketball and baseball. During this time, Howard joined hands with Deborah Lewis in the game of marriage (later dissolved). He then graduated from Northeastern State University, majoring in Education, and served a two-year stint in the Army reserves. Howard was his own biggest fan, often declaring, "I know I look good!" followed by a loud applause of his own hands and a booming laugh.
Third Quarter
The next quarter of Howard's life saw him coaching and teaching at Dubois Schools in Summit, OK. His influential career spanned over two decades, and he retired as the revered leader of the Dubois Demons. During this time, he teamed up with Faye McMullen in marriage, a valuable player who later moved with him to Muskogee Schools in the early '90s. Off the court, Howard refereed basketball games and umpired softball/baseball games, and was a formidable opponent at the dominoes table, where he was known to talk a big game.
Final Quarter
Howard's winning streak continued throughout his life. His charming personality was his secret weapon, helping him develop relationships with most people he met and frequently using the bartering system to get what he needed. After hanging up his whistle at Muskogee Public Schools, Howard kept up his relationships with the Muskogee country club patrons by mowing their lawns through his "business" Abernathy Lawn Catering. Despite his deteriorating health, he loved going on cruises with his team of family and friends - not for the travel, but for the all-you-can-eat buffet; he often stayed in his room and ordered room service.
Post-Game
Howard was predeceased by his father William H. Abernathy Sr., mother Bertha Mae (Davis) Abernathy, sisters Joyce Abernathy Jackson, Gertrude Abernathy Blandon, niece Jamesetta Blandon, and nephew James Blandon Jr.
Carrying forward his legacy are his wife of 43 years Faye Abernathy, daughters Stephanie (Rahsaan) White, Shonika Breedlove, LaKehsha (Arther) McNac Jr., Jeniece (Colby) Abernathy, sons William H. Abernathy III, Donnie (Sandra) McMullen, Ronnie McMullen, along with his 14 grandchildren and great grandchildren. Also cherishing his memory are nephew Robert Jackson Jr. and nieces Treva and LaKisha Blandon.
As the final whistle blows, we remember Howard not just for the games he played, but for the life he lived, the people he touched, and the love he shared.
A Family Conducted Memorial Service will be held on Friday, October 27, 2023 at 10:00 a.m., in the Martin Luther King Center, 300 W. Martin Luther King St, Muskogee, OK.
