Obituary

Willie Mae Slaughter was born in Wagoner County between Haynes & Tullahassee, OK.  After her mother passed away when she was two years of age, her aunt raised her and they later moved to Muskogee, OK.

At the age of seven she entered Dunbar Elementary School & Sadler Junior & High School where she graduated with the Class of 1937.  She went on to attend Langston University in the fall of 1937.  She graduated with a Bachelor's degree in 1941.

Willie Mae returned to Muskogee where she met and married the love of her life, "Her Brown Eyed Sugar Babe" as she affectionately spoke of him.  Mr. Prince Edward Myers who shared 60 years of marriage until his passing.  Willie Mae is the mother of four children, Leta, Larry, Lesa and LaSarah.

At the age of nine years old, Willie Mae joined and was baptized at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church and attended Sunday School & BYPU.  As a young woman she joined Young Matrons Auxiliary and served as President & Treasure.  As an adult, she became a member of the Usher Board and traveled and attended district meetings.  She held offices in Collate District Usher and also a statewide member of Ushers union for fifty years or more.  She later moved her membership to Antioch Baptist Church under the direction of Rev. Dr. Ben Noble who knew her well and she was put to work immediately as a usher. She served on her post for more than 45 years until her health began to fail.  She traveled with Rev. Noble all around the district, state and national meetings.  She was a chaperone to the youth.  She later became president of the Usher Board.

Her Masonic affiliation includes being a member of the OE5-Ada Chapter #25 Daughter of Isis of Tulsa serving as Commander, Glouetta F. Duncan #2 Guild, Herman E. Duncan #26.  She served as Most Ancient Grand Matron of the Heroines of Jericho for 45 years, 20 years as Vice Mam and 25 years as Grand Mam of Oklahoma.  Later becoming a Grand Matron on the General High Court of the United States & Bahamas.  Throughout the year, Willie Mae has received many honors and awards with the most recent coming from the Alpha Psi Alpha Chapter of Muskogee, honoring her with the Service Award.

On Saturday, September 2nd, 2017 she was honored as North Third Street oldest living resident at the first annual Third Street Reunion.  But her greatest reward was presented to her on December 25th, 2017 when she received her heavenly reward, "Well Done, Willie Mae."  Willie Mae proudly served all duties of life as she traveled all over the world, she never met a stranger.  She's traveled to Germany, Italy, Japan and all over the U.S. with other Grand Officers.

Willie Mae loved her family and would give  them the world, she would sing her special lullaby for all of her grandkids.

Willie Mae was also known as the "Diva Granny" as she had a keen eye for fashion which landed her several sales positions at Calhoun's, Krocher & Carol Lee's Department Stores.

Willie Mae was also known for her easy going, fun loving spirit and her snappy comeback.  She was a great pillar of the community, always inspiring and encouraging others.

Willie Mae was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 60 years, Prince Edward Myers, two sisters, and one brother.

She leaves to cherish the 99 years of love and memories, four children, Leta "Judy" Grayson, Larry Prince Myers, Lesa Marie Engram, LaSarah Ann Myers, 2 sisters, Collota Graham and Hermazine Smith, a sister-in-law, Larsetta Myers-Shepherd, 13 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, 54 great- great-grandchildren along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.



A Home Going Celebration is scheduled Friday, January 5, 2018, 11:00 a.m., Antioch Church of Muskogee, 500 W. Broadway, Muskogee, OK; with Rev. Marlon Coleman, delivering the eulogy.  Interment will follow in Ft. Gibson National Cemetery, Ft. Gibson, OK.

Visitation will be Thursday, 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Masonic Rites will be at 6:00 p.m., Antioch Church of Muskogee, 500 W. Broadway, Muskogee, OK.
