Yvonne J.
Hughes
July 18, 1939 – July 25, 2024
On July 18, 1939, a bouncing baby girl was born to Minnie Prince, she was named Yvonne Jacqueline but she was lovingly known as Yvonne J. She was the second of four children. Minnie later married Richard Hughes, to this union two children were born. They became a blended family in love. This union was later dissolved.
Growing up in Muskogee, Yvonne attended Muskogee Public Schools. She graduated from Manual Training High School. After graduation, Yvonne worked in the field of childcare and she also performed domestic work. Yvonne worked until her health would no longer afford her the opportunity to be employed.
Having a personal relationship with God was something that came natural to Yvonne. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Beebe Memorial C.M.E. in Muskogee, OK. She later moved to Tulsa, OK and became a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church in Tulsa, OK under the leadership of Pastor Dr. Willie Lauderdale. She left Oklahoma for California, although she moved out of the state, she never moved away from God. While living in California she attended Saints' Rest Missionary Baptist Church in Oakland, CA. Upon her return to Tulsa, she reunited with Gethsemane Baptist Church. While at Gethsemane Baptist Church, Yvonne served in various capacities such as an usher, Sunday School as well as a member of the Pastor's Aide Committee. But her biggest joy was being a servant for God. Leaving Gethsemane Baptist Church was a hard decision but she moved her membership to Greater Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in support of her son, Rev. Andre Hughes, who had become their newly elected pastor.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents; her parents Minnie Parker and Richard Hughes; stepfather John Parker; two brothers, Floyd Tate and Lamar Prince Sr.; son Michael Hughes; one grandson James Hughes Jr.; and two nephews Mark and Johnny Jones.
Remembering her life and honoring her legacy; two sons James (Juju) Hughes (Sheila) of Gilbert, AZ and Pastor Andre Terry Hughes of Tulsa, OK; three sisters Erma Hughes-Walker of Brentwood, CA, Beverly Hughes and Barbara Hughes of Tulsa, OK; daughter-in-law Gloria Hughes of Fairfield, CA; two Goddaughters, B.J. Melvin of Broken Arrow, OK, and Karen Olden of Tulsa, OK; 11 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
A Home Going Celebration is scheduled, Saturday, August 3, 2024, 11:00 a.m., Greater Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, 2037 N. Utica Ave, Tulsa, OK; with her son, Pastor Terry Hughes, delivering the eulogy. Interment will follow in Doyle Cemetery, Taft, OK. Visitation will be Friday at Greater Mt Carmel Baptist Church from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
